5 Things You Wanted To Know About Botox - But Never Asked

Posted by Jessie Bumgarner on Mar 21, 2017 3:30:05 PM

Millions of people have already made Botox Cosmetic a part of their beauty regimen to keep their skin looking fresh and youthful. Botox Cosmetic is the only FDA approved treatment to temporarily improve the appearance of both moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow's feet in adults. If you have been thinking about getting rid of those fine lines and wrinkles, here are 5 things you should know about Botox:

Does Botox Hurt?

Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a pinch. Your provider may use ice to numb the treatment area. If you are concerned about discomfort, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

When Will I See Results?

Botox takes on average 5-10 days to relax and see full results and last anywhere from 3-4 months. Some people tell me they can see a slight difference in a day or two.  Most people will be at nearly full effect in one week. It is at it's peak of effectiveness in two weeks.

What Should I NOT Do After Treatments?

  • DO NOT take Ibuprofen, aspirin, or vitamin E for 24 hours after injection
  • DO NOT massage or manipulate the injection sites for 48 hours after injection
  • DO NOT do heavy exercising for 24 hours
  • DO NOT lay down for the next 4 hours

Do men receive BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments?

Yes. BOTOX® Cosmetic has also been clinically evaluated in male patients. In clinical studies for moderate to severe frown lines, 17.5% of patients treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic were men. In the clinical studies for moderate to severe crow's feet, male patients comprised approximately 10% of patients treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 10% of all cosmetic procedures performed in the United States in 2014 were on men—that is more than 1 million cosmetic procedures. The number of cosmetic procedures for men increased by 273% from 1997 to 2014.

How to Get Started with Botox

Posted by Jessie Bumgarner on Jun 30, 2016 12:58:46 PM

Have you been thinking about BOTOX® Cosmetic for treating those frown lines and crow's feet that appear naturally with age?  You're not alone- Botox is a treatment that has been experienced by millions of people.  Approximately 10.9 million vials of Botox Cosmetic have been sold in the United States since 2002, and millions of people have already made Botox Cosmetic a part of what they do for themselves. Today, Botox Cosmetic is the #1 selling product of its kind in the world.

Are you wondering how to get started?  The first step is finding an experienced and reputable provider that you trust. Your cost will not only include the price of the product, but more importantly, the skill and expertise of the specialist or healthcare professional who is administering your treatment.  Botox is a technique-sensitive treatment—look for someone who is licensed and trained and has experience treating patients with Botox Cosmetic.

The Sona Difference

Sona MedSpa has been awarded the prestigious Black Diamond status by Allergan, the exclusive manufacturer of Botox, ranking Sona among the top 1% of providers in the country. In addition, Sona’s professional staff is expertly trained and certified by Allergan. You can feel confident choosing Sona’s experience and our top-notch medical providers.

What About Safety?

Botox Cosmetic is one of the most extensively studied medical aesthetic treatments and is approved for cosmetic use in 78 countries. Botox has a record of experience that aesthetic specialists like Sona know and trust. And, the safety and efficacy of Botox Cosmetic have been evaluated in both Allergan sponsored clinical trials as well as in 417 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals.

Be wary of discount products or “cheap” Botox—if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Creating a Treatment Plan

At Sona, you'll speak with an experienced treatment provider who will take the time to understand your treatment goals and develop a treatment plan that is right for you.  Your provider will perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas and treatment approach for achieving your goals.

What Should I Expect With Treatment?

  • Before your appointment, our provider will ask you what medications you are currently taking, any medical conditions, if you had surgery on your face or plan to do so, and if you are pregnant or nursing or plan to become pregnant or plan to nurse.
  • During your treatment, some clients report that being injected with Botox® feels like a pinch. Your provider may use ice to numb the treatment area.
  • The actual injection process takes about 10 minutes. Sona providers will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial analysis to determine the appropriate treatment areas for you.
  • After your treatment, you will see real, noticeable results - You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe frown lines, with results lasting up to 3 months.
  • You'll look like yourself - only with less noticeable frown lines and crow's feet. Botox® is a technique-sensitive treatment. You should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy.
  • You'll return to your daily routine. Treatment requires minimal downtime or recovery; it's often called a lunchtime procedure

Ask An Expert: Botox

Posted by Jessie Bumgarner on Aug 11, 2015 4:36:09 PM

Q: Who is a good candidate for Botox?

Any adult with annoying wrinkles that are caused by frequent facial movements, such as frown lines between the eyes.  It is important to get advice from an experienced injector, as some wrinkles in the face will require other treatments, such as dermal fillers like Juvederm.

Q: How is Botox different from dermal fillers?

Botox affects the wrinkles that are made by the action of muscles. The "11s" between the eyebrows and the "crow's feet" on the sides of the eyes are the best examples of wrinkling caused by muscle action.  Fillers treat the wrinkles, depressions and in some instances the "droop" that comes from loss of fat or volume in the face.  Areas that fillers help are the Nasolabial folds, the creases that extend from the nose to the corner of the mouth, and the Marionette lines that extend from the corner of the mouth to the jaw.  Newer fillers such as Voluma add volume to the cheeks and help to "lift" the face and restore- "plumpness"- that is a very nice enhancement.

Q: What does Botox do?

Botox acts on the muscle to "relax" or lessen the action of the muscle.  When the muscle doesn't "work" as hard, the wrinkles will be greatly minimized, or will disappear completely.

Q: When should you begin to see results?

Some people tell me they can see a slight difference in a day or two.  Most people will be at nearly full effect in one week.  It is at it's peak of effectiveness in two weeks.

Q: Why would you recommend Botox?

The effects of Botox are very predictable.  It does what it promises if dosed and administered properly.  It has a wonderful safety record, no or minimal pain with treatments and no or minimal side effects.  It is, in my opinion the best "fresher-upper" available.

Q: What is one of the most rewarding client transformations you’ve seen?

I have a client who I have been treating for over 8 years.  She came to the center because she said she was tired of people always asking her why she was angry.  She had deep wrinkles between her eyebrows that are easily treated with Botox.  Botox did the job and she relayed to me that she really thinks people relate to her differently now that she doesn't look like she is "in a bad mood."

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?

Seeing the transformation that can occur from Botox as well as other aesthetic treatments that I do is very rewarding.  It makes a huge difference in how people feel about themselves and can be a real boost to their self-confidence.  I also like the consultations that I do.  There is abundant, confusing, over-stated, or just plain wrong information available.  Developing a treatment plan and educating clients is very important to me.  Many times people focus on one wrinkle and have no idea that while Botox is an awesome treatment, it won't fix everything.  That is where client education comes in and it is an essential part of any treatment.
